Natural Pearls

 

A natural pearl is a pearl that forms in nature with no human intervention. it begins as a piece of grit or other forein substance that makes its way into the shell of a marine or freshwater mollusk (oysters, clams) by chance. A defense mechanism kicks-in to coat the particle with layer after layer of a substance called nacre, eventually forming a pearl.

Pearls are organic gems created by layers of nacre. In history, natural pearls were greatly valuable, as thousands of oysters had to be searched for just one pearl. They were rare because they were created only by chance. Currently, a majority of pearls on market are cultured pearls.

The beauty of natural pearls never fails to amaze ladies and girls. Mollusks create pearls in a palette of colors, from white to black and almost everything in between. Pearl color refers specifically to the color of the pearl's body, considered the fundamental color of the pearl.

Like the "four Cs" of diamond quality, shopping for pearls involves paying attention to a few important elements. High-quality pearl jewelry should consist of pearls of high luster and good surface quality, and the pearls should match in terms of color, shape and size.
